Team 1180, nicknamed The Atomsmashers, is headquartered in Thunderbolt, Ga. In 2003, a group of exceptionally bright students of Sol C. Johnson High School registered as the 1,180th team to enter FIRST Robotics.

The purpose of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is to expose young people to engineering, technology, and science in an intense and competitive way. Once a year, teams from all over the globe meet to compete with robots they have constructed using their knowledge and dedication. The ultimate prize is placing first, beating out thousands of other teams, at the FIRST Championship. The real prize, however, is the knowledge and experience gained from competing against and learning from the other students and mentors.

Team 1180’s 2006 Robotics team consists of 16 students and 8 mentors. For a period of six weeks, the team mysteriously disappears only to reappear to ship an orange and royal blue crate to FIRST. Inside the colorful crate resides the team’s 2006 robot for the Peachtree Regional in Duluth, Ga.
