The Culinary Arts training program at the Starfish Café is a collaborative effort between Union Mission and Savannah Technical College . The program is geared towards helping homeless, low-income and at-risk participants develop the skills they will need to secure employment and become stable and self-sufficient.

The 18-week program trains the students in Culinary Fundamentals as well as Life Skills. The students spend 7 weeks in the classroom and the remaining 11 in the Café “running” the restaurant. Upon graduation the students receive a ServSafe certificate in sanitation and a quarter worth of college credit towards a two-year culinary arts degree from Savannah Technical College.

Since the Café opened (as the Bread and Butter) in 2001, a difference has been made for 223 homeless people who know work in the food services industry.
