[Savannah] – The Deep South Orchid Society, Inc. of Savannah is expecting several hundred entries at its annual orchid show, May 30 – June 1, 2008. This year’s event will be held at Savannah Mall, 14045 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA.

There will be lavish orchid displays and exhibits and four commercial vendors will have orchid plants and supplies for sale all 3 days.

In conjunction with the show, there will be a meeting of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance (IPA) on Saturday, May 31st. Speakers and their topics will be:

• Tom Harper, Stones River Orchids, Franklin, TN – “Judging Phalaenopsis”
• Michael Wenzel, Atlanta Botanical Gardens – “The Phalaenopsis Collection of The Atlanta Botanical Gardens”
• H. P. Norton, Orchidview, Moncks Corner, SC – “Growing and Reblooming Phals on the Windowsill”

An orchid repotting and diagnostic clinic will be featured Sunday, June 1st from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Deep South Orchid Society members will be on hand to help diagnose problem plants and/or repot your orchid. Diagnostic services are free and repotting is provided at a nominal fee, based on pot size.

Show hours are 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm on Friday, May 30th; 10:00 am - 9:00 pm Saturday, May 31st; and 12:00 pm - 5:30 pm on Sunday, June 1st. Orchids may be entered under 128 different classifications, including group exhibits from area orchid societies, individual open competition, and orchid-related art exhibits. There is no charge to enter the competition.

Entries will be accepted for judging Thursday, May 29th from 9:00 am until 7:00 pm. Exhibits may be set up beginning at 8:00 am on Thursday. Judging will begin at 9:00 am Friday, May 30th. Deep South Orchid Society, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting interest in orchids and orchid cultivation. The society is an affiliate of the American Orchid Society in Delray Beach, FL. Meetings are held the second Monday of the month at 7 PM at First Presbyterian Church, Stewart Hall, 520 East Washington Avenue in Savannah and are open to anyone interested in orchids.
