History Theatre researches, writes and presents plays about the heritage of Savannah, Georgia for local residents, history students and cultural heritage tourists. Drawing on the city’s rich and complex past, the theatre brings to light significant events and local historical figures that have shaped the character of the city.
The producers, Fritz and Lorrie Rumpel, formerly owned Tybee Theater Cafe and presented original plays such as Blues Heaven, about the relationship between blues artists Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, and Malcolm X, a one-man show lifted from his speeches expressing the progression of Malcolm X’s beliefs regarding racial separation and reconciliation. The theatre also produced many Tennessee Williams plays, culminating in a festival showcasing five plays: The Glass Menagerie, Gnaediges Fraulein, Small Craft Warnings, I Can’t Imagine Tomorrow, and A Perfect Analysis Given By A Parrot. Other shows included Godspell, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, and Love Letters.
History Theatre hopes to facilitate racial reconciliation, as well as to inform and entertain.
