Altamaha Riverkeeper and Ogeechee Riverkeeper present the 3rd Annual “Rivers Rock!” Low Country River Jam on October 7, 2010 at Moon River Brewing Company in Savannah. The exciting event features the used, abused, and rhinestone-infused band, Junkyard Angel, special beer crafted just for the occasion by Moon River brewery, and delicious munchies. Highlighting the evening will be a fabulous raffle and auction. Each guest will receive an earth-friendly goody bag chock full of local favorites.
This year “Rivers Rock!” will benefit two coastal Georgia Waterkeeper® Alliance member organizations: Altamaha Riverkeeper and Ogeechee Riverkeeper. These organizations actively work to protect their respective river basins, a vital part of our health, heritage, community identity, and pride. Riverkeepers combine firsthand knowledge of our waterways with a commitment to the rights of our communities to enjoy clean water. As dedicated stewards, our Riverkeepers are in town hall meetings rallying community support, in classrooms educating the next generation, participating in water monitoring, and conducting outreach activities to encourage appreciation of our valuable natural resources.
Unfortunately there are growing threats to these pristine rivers. Pollution from aging industrial complexes, increased pressure from population growth, and sewage all endanger their health. Fish in our rivers and estuaries are contaminated with the toxic heavy metal, mercury. This pollution combined with droughts, lack of freshwater flow, and the loss of wetlands are sending our rivers into a downward spiral.
The event is hosted by steering committee members David Acuff, Candice Connell, John and Jessica Mnieckowski, Jason Nielubowicz, Neely North, Jamie Smith, Kelly Weber, Lydia Williams and Ashleigh Womack, an impressive group of professionals working to increase conservation and generate new support for protection of our waterways and our way of life.
