The Savannah City Council unanimously voted Thursday to purchase the Coffee Bluff Marina located at 14915-14918 Coffee Bluff Road for $1.5 million - a move that brings an end to years of non-action on the issue.
Alderman Jeff Felser, however, did abstain from voting due to a former business relationship with the prior owner, Rosso Corsa Enterprises.
The Mayor and Aldermen have previously approved the concept of acquiring the property to maintain public access to the Forest River, but no further action had been taken in some time.
"Numerous times this has come before council. Maybe over a decade now, however we've never taken action on it. I understand some of the reason why, but the city doesn't own any marinas. What we're talking about is public access to the water," said Thomas, a strong proponent of the purchase.
"I know we don't really have the funds to develop it yet, but in the long run it will be a great addition to the City's assets and serve the residents of Savannah well," said Thomas.
The total site consists of approximately 2.7 acres. A 40-foot public right-of-way runs through the middle of the property, terminating at a defunct public boat ramp, which has been closed for safety reasons.
The property contains a 1,080 square foot building, which serves as a marina office and store. In addition, there is a small residential structure, a boat storage shed in poor condition, stationary wood docks, floating docks and a boat hoist, all operated by the present owner.
Long-term plans may include additional improvements for recreational and water-related activities.
