What’s New in the Old South? Come Visit Savannah to Find Out!

by The Presidents' Quarters Inn, www.presidentsquarters.com

March into Spring at The Presidents' Quarters Inn in Savannah. The month of March has Savannah all abuzz with music, Mercer — and even a Main Street Tour straight from the ‘original’ president’s quarters, The White House, just to name a few.

SAVANNAH GA (February 27, 2010) -- Savannah is preparing for its first presidential visit since 2004. Did you know that Savannah is the next stop on President Barack Obama’s “White House to Main Street” Tour? On March 2, the President will visit Georgia’s oldest city to talk about the economy and creating jobs.

Though he may only be in town for a day, Mr. Obama’s visit kicks off a month-long celebration of all things Savannah, including the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Savannah Music Festival, Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens, and the grand re-opening of Ellis Square.

The greening o’ the city takes place on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) when some 400,000 revelers converge on the historic district for the parade and other related events. Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration is the city’s largest annual event and the second-largest in the country. The Presidents' Quarters Inn is on the parade route!

The renowned Savannah Music Festival, the biggest in Georgia and one of only a handful of its kind in the world takes place March 18 through April 3. Acts ranging from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis to bluesman Henry Butler and southern rockers the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band transform Savannah into the center of the music universe when they take the stage at a dozen venues throughout the historic district.

Even better, most Festival performances are within walking distance of The Presidents’ Quarters Inn. Located on Oglethorpe Square, the Inn is near performing venues such as Jepson Center, Lucas Theatre, Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences. And for the ultimate in convenience, veteran innkeeper Jane Sales and her staff can assist guests with everything from concerts tickets to getting to and from the shows. and

As you venture in and around town, be sure to check out what else makes Savannah the place to be in March: Now in its 75th year, The Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens (March 25-28) continues to offer visitors a glimpse inside Savannah’s most treasured private homes. The unique walking tours highlight the city’s landmarks, architecture and history through home tours, seminars and special evening events. More information on tour schedule and tickets can be obtained at the front desk of The Presidents' Quarters Inn.

The new Ellis Square is set for its grand opening March 11.* Named after Henry Ellis, the second Royal Governor of the Georgia colony, one of Savannah’s original squares has been lovingly restored to include open spaces for public events and a new underground parking garage. Let yourself be mesmerized by the new interactive fountain in the center of the square, powered by state-of-the-art water jets and a dazzling light display. Nearby stands a bronze statue of native son, songwriter/lyricist Johnny Mercer, whose likeness was unveiled on what would have been his 100th birthday on November 18, 2009.

Over on the southern boundary of the historic district, Forsyth Park’s freshly renovated multi-million dollar visitor center is now open, complete with a new Forsyth Fort canopy, café, band stage, and plenty of seating areas. Lose yourself in the curtains of Spanish moss that descend from centuries-old oak trees or take in the view of one of the city’s most famous landmarks, the Forsyth Park Fountain.

And what’s a trip to the Old South without honest-to-goodness Southern cookin’? The Alligator Soul restaurant is widely acclaimed by locals and visitors alike. In addition to the restaurant’s fine dining supper menu, co-owner Maureen Craig and chef Christopher DiNello have recently introduced southern fare during lunch (under $10), including popular garden-fresh vegetarian and day boat fish. Alligator Soul is within walking distance from The Inn and the staff will gladly assist you with reservations.
