Infrastructure

We’re wired and wireless

Just because we’ve got the nation’s largest historic district doesn’t mean we don’t have brains beneath that pretty face. Approximately 38,000 miles of fiber optic cable run beneath our cobblestone streets. Savannah is the second largest telecommunications market in Georgia (just behind Atlanta), and has the second largest fiber optic deployment in Georgia (again, second to Atlanta). We have seven digital central offices and a Frame Relay Switch that serves all of the Savannah market.

The interoffice networks are equipped with 100% fiber, creating a self-healing telecommunications environment. With diverse routing, the telecommunications traffic is automatically rerouted to the back-up central office and customers do not experience any loss in service.

Yea, we said wireless!

Thanks to Spanish Moss , Savannah’s Wireless initiative, we’ve already got free wi-fi in several squares downtown. Coming in 2008, all of downtown Savannah’s squares (24 in all) will be pumping out a speedy wireless signal, effectively blanketing the downtown area.
