techSAV lunchFunction101: Unpacking Data Science and Machine Learning
June 21, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Join techSAV for lunch and learn. This event was designed with junior developers in mind but we welcome all developers at every experience level. Once per month we will have senior technologists share their ideas, best practices and lessons learned during a one hour presentation. There will be a short Q&A after every presentation so make sure to join in and ask questions!
June Title: Unpacking Data Science and Machine Learning
Description: Are you curious about all the buzz around data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence? In this talk we’ll unpack these terms and also take a peek under the hood at the technologies driving the “data revolution.” Is big data over-hyped? What do data scientist actually do? Will we all be answering to AI overlords in the near future? We’ll answer two of these three questions in this talk, and by the end you’ll be able start exploring machine learning on your own.
Bio: Dr. Justin Pounders is a lead data science instructor at General Assembly, equipping students across North America with the skills they need to enter this high-growth field. Data is cool, but Justin’s real interest is in the high-performance computational techniques that allow us to extract structured insight from data. Prior to joining General Assembly Justin was a professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, adjunct faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and a research engineer at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory. He holds a PhD in computational nuclear engineering from Georgia Tech.
